Join us March 5 as we welcome Marvi Sirmed, visiting professor of human rights and media at the University of Connecticut, and human rights activist to Kent State University.

Prior to working with Scholars at Risk (SAR), Marvi was a journalist in Pakistan, where she began – much to the dissatisfaction of her publishers – writing about incidents of violence against women, and “honor killings” in particular. Marvi drew the ire of many, particularly those who were invested in the system as it existed. She persisted nonetheless, even after surviving an assassination attempt. In 2019, the threats intensified, and she sought refuge and moved to the United States. She initially worked with the National Endowment for Democracy and has since been providing incredible classroom experiences at the University of Connecticut while continuing her outspoken human rights activism.

Scholars at Risk (SAR) is an international organization that provides refuge to scholars who are targeted by political violence and repression. SAR helps individuals resettle in countries where academic freedom is not threatened.

This event is free to attend.

Registration is no longer available because the registration deadline has passed.
